Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, close to Messina and Catania, Italy. It is the tallest active volcano in Europe.
Mt. Etna erupted again in July`11. The strong eruption - Etna's fifth since the beginning of the year 2011. The last eruption was in May.
The volcano is to blame for speeding clocks up by 15 minutes.
An eruption by Mount Etna left a nearby airport closed. The volcano spewed lava on to its south-eastern slopes and winds swept ash further afield, stopping flights at Catania's Fontanarossa airport.
Bemused Sicilians, meanwhile, were quick to blame the volcano after thousands noticed that their clocks were running 15 minutes fast. The fast forward time keeping has affected a wide spectrum of digital clocks and watches - from computers through to alarm clocks.
It was spotted when large numbers of locals started turning up for work early, and a Facebook page was organised for those involved to compare notes.
As well as Etna's volcanic activity, users have so far blamed aliens, poltergeists, solar explosions and electrical disturbances caused by underwater cables.The clock thing is a mystery to some, saying aliens, ghosts, or other events of the supernatural caused it. However, our lead scientist says other wise. The cause of the island-wide clock confusion remains unknown.
According to some sources "Since only digital clocks seemed to be affected, then one must consider the fact that digital clocks (like any other clock) do not measure time, but rather measure an event, such as the vibration of a cessium atom, and relate it to the passage of time," said Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin. "In the case of electronic media, such as digital clocks, it is logical to assume that some force apparently caused a local aberration that affected a change is the cyclic velocity of the even measured by the digital device, and not the actual passage of time itself."
So there is a scientific reason it happened.
In the 1970s an Unusual characteristics of Etna was found as erupted smoke rings, one of the first captured events of this type, which is extremely rare. This happened again in 2000.
And in 2011 one more unusual clock thing happened as a Unsolved MYSTERY.......
